Introduction
Ben Goodliffe has quickly established himself as one of Southend United's most important players since arriving at Roots Hall. A commanding centre-back with leadership qualities, aerial strength and extensive experience across both the National League and EFL, Goodliffe played a key role in the Shrimpers' success after joining initially on loan during the 2024/25 campaign before making the move permanent the following summer.
Biography
Born in Watford, Goodliffe began his football journey within Tottenham Hotspur's academy before continuing his development at Boreham Wood after leaving Spurs as a teenager. His progress quickly attracted attention from higher levels and Wolverhampton Wanderers secured his signature in 2017, bringing him into their Under-23 set-up. Loan football with Dagenham & Redbridge followed, where Goodliffe gained regular National League experience and demonstrated the qualities that would soon make him one of the division's standout defenders.

Southend United Career
Goodliffe's arrival at Roots Hall came during an important stage of Southend's season as the club pushed for promotion from the National League. He quickly became a regular and helped provide defensive stability. One of his most memorable moments came in the National League Play-Off semi-final against Forest Green Rovers when he found the net to help Southend progress to the Promotion Final. His performances convinced the club to pursue a permanent deal, and in July 2025 he officially joined the Shrimpers on a two-year contract.
Playing Style
Goodliffe is a traditional centre-back who combines physical presence with strong positional awareness. Comfortable in either a back four or back three, he excels in aerial duels, defensive organisation and reading the game. His experience at both National League and EFL level has helped him develop into a calm and dependable defender who leads by example.
