Southend United have announced the departure of head coach Kevin Maher, along with his long-term assistants Darren Currie and Mark Bentley, following a post-season review. The news came on 19 May 2026, just two days after the Shrimpers lifted the FA Trophy at Wembley.

In their statement, the club paid tribute to Maher’s record-breaking service, noting he had taken charge of more games than any other manager in the club’s modern history. Fans and the club alike now recognise him as one of the greatest figures in Shrimpers history β€” a player who captained us to glory, and a manager who guided us through our darkest days to silverware.

From Tottenham Academy to Roots Hall Legend

Kevin Andrew Maher was born on 17 October 1976 in Ilford. He came through Tottenham Hotspur’s academy but never made a first-team appearance. In January 1998 he joined Southend United on a free transfer and became an instant success.

Over the next decade, Maher made over 450 appearances for the club (383 in the league, scoring 22 goals). As captain, he led Southend through their most successful period in modern times:

  • League Two champions 2004–05
  • League One runners-up 2005–06 – taking Southend into the Championship for the first time
  • Multiple Player of the Season awards & PFA Team of the Year recognition

Known for his leadership, technical ability, and set-piece delivery, Maher was the heartbeat of the team through both the highs and the tough times.

The Homecoming: Manager in Crisis (2021–2026)

Maher returned to Roots Hall in October 2021 as first-team head coach when the club was in serious trouble β€” battling near the National League relegation zone, points deductions, transfer embargoes, and severe financial problems.

He brought with him trusted lieutenants Darren Currie (assistant) and Mark Bentley (first-team coach). Together they steadied the ship immediately.

Key Achievements as Manager

  • Consistent top-half finishes in the National League
  • National League Manager of the Month awards
  • 2025 National League play-off final (Wembley)
  • 2026 FA Trophy Winners – beating Wealdstone 4-2 on penalties at Wembley on 17 May 2026
  • Guided the club through the 2024 COSU takeover

Maher’s loyalty during the financial turmoil was remarkable. Many managers would have left for better security, but he stayed and protected the club when it needed him most.

A True Shrimpers Icon

Kevin Maher’s story at Southend spans more than 700 combined appearances and games in charge. From promotion-winning captain to the man who brought Wembley silverware back to Roots Hall, his legacy is secure.

As the club begins the search for a new manager, the outpouring of thanks from supporters says it all.

Thank you, Kev.
