Introduction

Harry Cardwell is a striker who already knew what it meant to be a Southend United player long before his return to Roots Hall. Powerful, hard-working and capable of leading the line, he became a popular figure during his first spell with the Shrimpers.

Biography

Born in Beverley and raised in East Yorkshire, Cardwell began with Hull City before joining Reading as a teenager. His early career took him through academy football, Scotland youth international football and senior loan spells that shaped him into a physical centre-forward.

Career Journey

Hull City and Reading

Cardwell spent time in both academy systems and gained senior loan experience with Woking and Braintree Town.

Grimsby Town

He joined Grimsby and gained Football League experience.

Chorley and Stockport County

Cardwell played a key role in Chorley's FA Cup run and later impressed on loan at Stockport County.

Southend United Career

Cardwell first joined Southend United in January 2022 and soon became an important attacking player. His best scoring campaign came in 2023/24, when he hit 18 National League goals. Forest Green Rovers triggered a release clause in 2024, but Cardwell later returned to Southend and marked his second home debut with a goal against Truro City in the FA Trophy.

Playing Style

Cardwell is a classic centre-forward who gives defenders a difficult afternoon. Strong, mobile and willing to battle for every ball, he can hold up play, bring team-mates into attacks and provide a penalty-box presence.

The Returning Favourite

Some players leave and the story ends. With Cardwell, it always felt slightly unfinished. His return gave Southend a familiar face with unfinished business at Roots Hall.
