Colchester-born defender John White first crossed the Essex divide on a short loan in August 2009, starting five League One games for Southend. He returned for good in July 2013 and became one of the club's most dependable and respected senior players.

Wearing the captain's armband, White led the Shrimpers through the dramatic 2015 League Two play-off final victory and promotion at Wembley. He stayed until May 2022, then played for Braintree Town before retiring in 2024; Southend also welcomed him back in a community role.
