Striker Stephen Humphrys joined Southend from Fulham in January 2019 and quickly became a significant part of the club's survival battle. After suffering serious facial injuries in a collision during a match at Accrington, he returned wearing a protective mask and came off the bench to score the late winner against Sunderland on 4 May 2019 that kept the Shrimpers in League One.

Humphrys went on to score eleven times in 35 competitive games before leaving for Rochdale in September 2020, later playing for Wigan Athletic and in Scotland.
