Introduction
Anthony Hartigan joins Southend United ahead of the 2026/27 season as a composed and experienced central midfielder with a strong grounding in both the EFL and the National League. Developed by AFC Wimbledon, he arrives at Roots Hall after an impressive spell with Barnet, where he became one of the division's most highly regarded midfielders.
Biography
Born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Hartigan joined AFC Wimbledon at the age of 14 after being spotted while playing for Pro Direct Soccer. He signed professional terms on his 17th birthday and quickly made history by becoming the first player born in the 2000s to represent AFC Wimbledon. His early senior football came in League One, where he built a reputation as a technically sound midfielder comfortable receiving the ball, recycling possession and taking responsibility in central areas.
Career Journey
AFC Wimbledon
Hartigan came through the academy, made his senior debut in 2017 and went on to make more than 100 league appearances for the club.
Newport County
A loan spell in 2021 gave him further League Two experience, including involvement in Newport's play-off campaign.
Mansfield Town
He joined Mansfield in 2022 and added more EFL experience before moving on loan to Barnet.
Barnet
Hartigan became a standout performer, winning multiple club awards in 2023/24 and later helping the Bees win the National League title.
Southend United Career
Southend United announced Hartigan's arrival in June 2026, with the midfielder joining the club for the 2026/27 campaign. His arrival adds control, experience and proven National League quality to Kieron Dyer's midfield options.
Playing Style
Hartigan is a central midfielder who likes to get on the ball and help dictate the tempo of a match. He is comfortable operating as a deeper midfielder, has the discipline to protect the defence, and brings experience from both promotion-chasing National League football and the EFL.
Midfield Control
Hartigan gives Southend a player who can settle games down, link the defence and attack, and bring a calm presence to the middle of the pitch. His Barnet honours show he can be a major influence in a successful National League side.
